Are There Local Markets for My Flax Straw? by Lee Pengilly, Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission
Local uses include: 1) Bales (large or small) used as a simple building or insulation material for, Livestock windbreak structures, Feeder pig barn wall insulation and Containment for feedbunks/grain pile storage. 2) Bales or as loose straw used as a geotextile for: (a) Erosion control on slopes and in water courses; (b) Emergency erosion control on wind-swept, barren ground (c) Soil stabilization around livestock feedlots; (d) Soil stabilization in oil-patch road and drilling site preparation; (e) Soil remediation/enhancement during road construction; (f) Weed control and moisture retention in shelter belts, gardens and golf courses; (g) Outdoor livestock bedding, especially on field wintering sites. 3) Bales as heating/fuel source for Yard sites, Greenhouses, Hog barns and Grain drying/wood drying. 4) Pelletized straw for use in Grain/Wood/Pellet Burning stoves and Coal burning stoves.
