SaskFlax seeks leaders in the flax industry

September 7, 2010 - The past year has been a challenging one in Saskatchewan's flax industry. Despite this, the future still looks bright for flax, one of the most versatile products the Prairies has to offer. The Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission (SaskFlax) is seeking flax producers who want to contribute to a positive future for flax for two positions that will come open this year on its Board of Directors.

An election, if required, will be held in the fall and the new directors' three-year terms will begin at the close of the annual meeting on January 10, 2011.

The six-member Board of producers provides direction for the management of over $500,000 in check-off funds to represent the interests of flax producers across Saskatchewan. SaskFlax invests in research, communication and market facilitation activities to further develop the flax industry and ensure quality flax products worldwide.

“Our Board represents more than 10,000 growers and we're the largest producer and exporter of flax in the world,” said Linda Braun, SaskFlax Executive Director. “We welcome interest from flax producers around the province to help lead our industry into the future.”

With a nomination signed by three other registered growers, all registered producers of Saskatchewan flax who have not requested a refund of checkoff dues as of October 21, 2009 are eligible to run for the Board. “Registered producers” are those who have sold flax within the past two years. A registered producer that is a corporation, association, or society may hold office only through a designated representative appointed in writing and filed with the Commission. If this applies to you, please contact the office to receive the certificate of eligibility for completion and submission with your nomination form.
