New flax market information available: report and podcast

March 16, 2009 (Saskatoon, SK) The first of the monthly reports through the SaskFlax Market Support Program is now available online—and a new feature has been added this month, in the form of an audio podcast.

In January, the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission announced the program, which for the next year will provide timely information on marketing flax to producers. SaskFlax has teamed up with Weber Commodities, a Saskatoon-based market information company to provide a series of detailed reports on supply, demand, and world markets on the SaskFlax website.

Producers can connect to the SaskFlax website to listen to a five-minute interview between Larry Weber and Grant Whitmore, crop procurement specialist for Bioriginal Food & Science Corporation in Saskatoon. “The interview has some pointers about the characteristics of the specialty flax market Bioriginal is working in,” said Allen Kuhlmann, flax producer and Chair of SaskFlax. “Producers have been telling us for years that it is difficult to access market information about flax, so we decided to do start providing some tools to help farmers make informed, timely decisions for marketing their flax.”

The March report examines current price trends and points out the price spread between US crushers and Canadian bids. Producers, said Larry Weber in the report, are already busy considering their options. “Develop a plan while you are busy seeding that will protect yourself from any downside and profit from any upside. The best way to do that is to keep in touch with your buyers and place grain pricing orders before your tractors hit the field,” he said.

Anyone can access the SaskFlax Market Support Program by going to the “Marketing” section on the SaskFlax website and looking in the "Monthly Reports" section. Users who wish to be notified when a new report is posted can enter their email address on the SaskFlax website.
