SUSTAINABILITY PERSPECTIVES:

#4: Preparing for the Interview

This is the fourth in our series of articles describing the Sustainability Visioning project that SaskFlax is working on.

Lee Pengilly is a rancher, writer and published author from Melville, Saskatchewan. She was one of seventeen stakeholders in the Canadian Flax Sustainability Visioning Project.

Before we had our personal interviews we received an email from SaskFlax Executive Director, Linda Braun that provided us with an outline of the time commitment required for The Natural Step process and what those hours would entail:

  1. Participate in a TNS interview (1 hour)
  2. Complete TNS e-learning (4 – 6 hours)
  3. Participate in TNS webinars (3 hours)
  4. Review the flax value chain prior to the March workshop
  5. Read the AAFC Sustainable Development Strategy and Vision document
  6. Record the time spent on the project
  7. Participate in the Sustainability Vision Workshop in March of 2009

The first step was to participate in the interview. Participants had a choice of 11 days, each with a variety of timeslots in which to set up a convenient time for a one-on-one telephone interview with TNS facilitators, Mary Beckie and Pong Leong.

Well in advance we received an email with the interview questions:

  1. What role do you play in the flax value chain? What is role at SaskFlax (if applicable)? What is your role with NAFGEN (if applicable)? [NAFGEN – Natural Fibers for a Green Economy]

  2. What does sustainability mean to you, as an individual, and also as it relates to your involvement in the flax industry? (And SaskFlax if applicable?)

  3. What do you see as the main sustainability opportunities and challenges in the flax value chain? (These could be economic, environmental, social or a combination of these aspects.)

  4. How do you think a sustainability visioning and planning process could help in shaping objectives, strategies and actions of the flax industry and SaskFlax?

  5. How could a sustainability framework impact on your role in the flax value chain?

  6. How can you contribute to achieving a sustainability vision for the flax industry and SaskFlax?

  7. What aspects of sustainability do you want to learn more about?

  8. Do you have any comments or questions about this sustainability visioning exercise?

Wow – this is where the “rubber hits the road”! I figured I’d best take pen to paper and give this some serious thought!
